Two Butler Tech high school students were recognized at the October Board of Education meeting for their extraordinary courage and professionalism after stopping to render aid at the scene of a serious automobile accident.
Logan Gutzwiller and Daniel Schultheiss, both senior-only students from Ross High School, enrolled in the Firefighting Levels I & II: 1-Year Program at Butler Tech’s D. Russel Lee Campus, were driving when they came upon a vehicle that had struck a tree at a high rate of speed. The driver sustained significant injuries, and without hesitation, the students immediately stopped to help.
While wearing their Butler Tech uniforms, Gutzwiller and Schultheiss provided critical patient care, controlling bleeding and offering emotional support to the victim until emergency responders arrived. Witnesses reported that the students remained calm, collected, and professional throughout the high-stress situation, demonstrating the skills and character they have developed through their training at Butler Tech.
Logan Henson, a 1997 graduate of the D. Russel Lee Electrical program, who also stopped to assist, later contacted the school to express his appreciation. “They did a wonderful job,” Henson said. “They were extremely professional and carried themselves as fine young men and as good students representing Butler Tech.”
Chris Johns, Fire Chief from the Ross Township Fire Department, attended the Board meeting to personally commend the students, presenting them with challenge coins inscribed with the department’s motto: Be Professional. Be Adaptable. Be Nice.
In addressing the students, Chief Johns shared, “Your passion, your willingness to step up and help in such a serious situation, and your professionalism will serve you throughout your careers. Keep this passion—you’re going to do wonderful things.”
Butler Tech is proud of Logan and Daniel for their selflessness and dedication to helping others. Their actions reflect the highest standards of the Public Safety programs and embody the Butler Tech mission of transforming lives.
