Students in the Construction Technology program at Butler Tech’s D. Russel Lee campus recently completed a project that will benefit skilled trades students for years to come.
Under the direction of instructor Clem Skinner, junior and senior students designed and constructed the training walls that will be used in the new Electrical Technology and Power Systems Lab. Over the course of approximately four weeks, students developed material lists, organized workflow, managed timelines and completed construction of the walls during their daily lab sessions.
The project provided an opportunity for students to apply the same skills they would use on a professional job site while contributing to a real need within the school. Every measurement, cut and assembly required teamwork, attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Once installed, the training walls will serve as a hands-on learning environment where Electrical Technology and Power Systems students can practice device wiring and develop industry skills in a realistic setting.
The project is a great example of Butler Tech’s Pay It Forward mindset. While developing their own skills, Construction Technology students created something that will support the learning experiences of future students. For the Construction Technology students involved, the project delivered more than hands-on experience. It provided the opportunity to see their work make an immediate impact while contributing to a learning space that will be used by future classes for years to come.
