Passion to Performance:
Alex Salazar’s Journey Through Butler Tech’s School of the Arts

Update

Alex Salazar, a School of the Arts student with curly hair and glasses, kneels on a rooftop with a guitar. Sporting a denim jacket, black shirt, and jeans against a green fence with blurred cityscapes in the background, they effortlessly blend into their creative surroundings. For Alex Salazar, music is more than a hobby—it’s a way of life. From his earliest memories, music was ever-present in his household, thanks to a musical mother who sang and played clarinet and a father with a deep love for dissecting songs. But it wasn’t until Alex received his first guitar as a child that his personal journey began.

Like many young musicians, his early passion ebbed and flowed. It wasn’t until a family visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio that he reignited his dream. Reflecting on the experience, Alex credits the trip as the pivotal moment when he decided music was his path. “That’s when I realized that this is what I wanted to do,” Alex shared.

Soon after, Alex entered Butler Tech’s 10th Grade Career Exploration Academy, where he explored his musical potential through songwriting and performance. His passion caught the attention of instructors, especially after his showcase performance, which helped solidify his path toward Butler Tech’s School of the Arts (SOA).

Once at SOA, Alex’s growth as a musician, performer, and leader accelerated. From the moment he stepped on stage for the school’s 70s-themed show, he began honing his ability to collaborate with vocalists, dancers, and other musicians—a new experience that taught him the importance of teamwork in the creative arts.

SOA also exposed him to diverse musical styles, including traditional African drumbeats and world rhythms, which expanded his musical worldview. “It gave me a whole different perspective,” Alex explained, noting how this exposure shaped his songwriting style. He also learned to accept constructive criticism from mentors like Mark Becknell, SOA’s Recording Arts Instructor, who encouraged him to raise the key to a song for better vocal clarity—an adjustment that paid off.A person with curly hair plays an electric guitar while leaning against a concrete wall outdoors, clad in a denim jacket and jeans. With each show, Alex’s creative voice became clearer. Early on, his songs were deeply personal, and he often doubted their quality. But positive feedback from peers, instructors, and audiences shifted his perspective. Over time, he realized the true power of his music lay in its ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level.

“Having someone tell me, ‘This song made me feel something,’ that’s really why I write,” Alex said. He committed to creating authentic, heartfelt music that resonates with his listeners.

His artistic brand grew from this philosophy. With help from his brother Gabriel, who designed his logo, Alex established a recognizable visual identity—a clean, minimalist design featuring a guitar headstock integrated with his initials. The design, much like his music, allows people to see it in their own way, which Alex embraces.

Alex’s creative journey isn’t one he’s walking alone. His band, The Urban Legend, formed from friendships and shared musical experiences. The four-piece group, consisting of Alex (guitar and vocals), Colby Watts (drums), Gabriel Salazar (bass), and Matt Esau (keys), came together naturally. Having played together in their church’s youth band, the friends shared an undeniable rhythm and chemistry.

While The Urban Legend started with casual jam sessions, they quickly moved on to playing gigs at Findlay Market, Three Feather Records, and even Alex’s mom’s wedding. Their connection is clear, both on and off stage.

“We’re not just a group of kids who want to play music,” Alex said. “We’re young adults who are actually doing it.”

On December 20th, Alex and The Urban Legend will take the stage for a special show in the SOA Event Center celebrating the debut of his first album. Doors open at 6 p.m., with The Urban Legend taking the stage from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a high-energy set of rock covers.

At 8 p.m., the show will shift gears as Alex performs his debut album in full. Between songs, he’ll share the stories behind each track, offering audiences a personal glimpse into his creative process. The event is free to attend, but donations and merchandise sales will support the album’s production.

“We want people to hear the album and feel like they’re a part of it,” Alex said. “The goal is to raise $4,000 to $6,000, which would allow the band greater creative freedom in the recording process.” The event will also feature raffle prizes and items from local small businesses, creating a community atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the music itself.

Balancing school, band practice, gigs, and an album release is no small feat, but Alex embraces the challenge. His teachers at SOA have been a vital support system, encouraging him to keep pushing forward even when deadlines loom large. Their belief in him fuels his passion for his craft.

As Alex prepares for the next stage of his journey, he reflects on his experience at SOA. His advice to younger students is simple but powerful: “Come in ready to work and ready to collaborate,” he said. “This is a school where personality is not only encouraged but celebrated. Be the best version of yourself.”

With his bandmates by his side and his debut album on the horizon, Alex Salazar is more than just a student of music—he’s a testament to the transformative power of Butler Tech’s School of the Arts. His story isn’t just about finding a career; it’s about making an impact.
