Gavin Owens, junior in Green Engineering, received a Special Recognition Award in the Caring for Our Watersheds competition, presented by the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. His project, titled “Water Works Without Waste,” was selected from nearly 150 proposals submitted by high school students across Ohio for its creative and actionable approach to reducing plastic pollution in waterways.
The award acknowledges Gavin’s initiative to combat waste entering the Ohio River by installing large netting systems over drainage outlets. An idea inspired by global efforts to prevent pollution, such as those implemented in parts of India.
“I researched the outlets of drain systems and saw how some countries put nets over drainage to catch plastic before it enters waterways,” said Gavin. “Here, I think we could install similar nets on major outlets that lead directly to the Ohio River. They’re not cheap, but they could reduce waste by up to 20%.”
Gavin’s project stood out to the judges not only for the proposed solution but for its depth of planning. He outlined a detailed, step-by-step strategy that included community outreach, educational tie-ins for local schools, and ideas to promote awareness through student-led cleanups and recycling initiatives.
Judges praised Gavin’s submission for its ambition, thoughtfulness, and layered approach.
Gavin was invited to attend the finals celebration at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, where he was acknowledged for his proposal. Gavin also earned a monetary award and has been encouraged to pursue the project’s implementation, with potential funding support.
The Caring for Our Watersheds program empowers students to identify environmental concerns in their communities and propose realistic, community-driven solutions. Gavin’s proposal exemplifies how one student’s creativity and commitment to change can make waves—literally.
Congratulations, Gavin, on using your voice and vision to protect the planet and inspire others to care for our watersheds. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
