Butler Tech’s Project LIFE program was celebrated yesterday after being named one of only 20 organizations nationwide, and the only one in Ohio, to receive the 2025 Ability Transcends Challenges (ATC) Award. The award, presented by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) in partnership with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and Major League Baseball (MLB), honors champions of disability employment and inclusion.
Founded in 2007, Project LIFE has grown from a single classroom to a nationally replicated model now serving students in more than 50 locations across 14 states and Canada. Over 90% of Project LIFE interns nationwide achieve their employment goals, helping to transform expectations for workplace inclusion.
“The Ability Transcends Challenges Award celebrates organizations that are leading the way in creating inclusive workplaces and opportunities for individuals with disabilities,” said Kandi Pickard, NDSS President & CEO. “Project LIFE at Butler Tech embodies this spirit, demonstrating how commitment, innovation, and support can transform lives and set a standard for inclusion across communities and workplaces alike.”
Adding excitement to the afternoon, Mr. Redlegs, the beloved Cincinnati Reds mascot, brought Major League Baseball energy. He surprised the crowd with his grand entrance, shared high-fives with students, and helped present the award plaque to Butler Tech and the Monroe Project LIFE class.
Accepting the award, Lindsay Bodeker, Project LIFE instructor, expressed gratitude on behalf of students, staff, and the entire Butler Tech community.
“This award is a reflection of our students’ hard work, our staff’s dedication, and the unwavering support of our entire Butler Tech family,” Bodeker said.
The event also acknowledged the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation for its matching grant support that has helped expand Project LIFE across the country.
By earning the Ability Transcends Challenges Award, Butler Tech joins a select group of organizations nationwide recognized for breaking barriers and creating pathways to meaningful employment for people with disabilities. Yesterday’s celebration, with the Cincinnati Reds’ mascot leading the cheers, underscored how inclusion, community, and opportunity can truly transform lives.
