Thirty-five students enrolled in Butler Tech programs achieved top rankings at the 2017 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Cluster Meetings. Among this recognition is a team of Butler Tech seniors who earned a position as National Qualifiers for the FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl and will compete in the 2018 FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA, June 28 – July 2.

Students masterfully demonstrated their skills and knowledge in a number of events specific to their program. Of the 35 students, seven earned first place; 12 earned second place; 11 earned third place; two earned fourth place; and one earned fifth.

Butler Tech seniors Sarah Radcliffe, Olivia Potunas, Jacquelinn Gasdorf, Hunter Martini and Taylor Ferrell of Fairfield High School formed the team that competed for one of 12 positions to become National Qualifiers in the first round of the FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl. Students were tested in six categories: Personal Finance; Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, including Family, Career and Community Studies; Technology, including Fashion and Housing Design; Health and Safety, including Food Sciences and Nutrition, and Early Childhood and Human Development; Environment, including Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation; and FCCLA Knowledge.

The FCCLA/LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl consists of three rounds: the first qualifies the top 12 teams to advance to the third round; the second allows non-qualifying teams to compete in the “Second Chance” wild card quiz where only the top four teams move forward; and the third round brings all 16 teams together for the National Leadership Conference.

FCCLA is a national career organization for students enrolled in Family and Consumer Science programs that helps build their leadership skills for their academic and career pursuits. In addition, students also learn how to build strong families and be active participants in their community.
