Butler Tech and Northwest Local Schools celebrated the grand opening of a new, student-run cosmetology salon on Jan. 11. The salon is located in the Northwest Career Center building on the Northwest High School campus (10761 Pippen Road, Cincinnati, OH, 45231).
Butler Tech added a two-year cosmetology program for juniors and seniors at Northwest High School in 2014. Students are trained in a full range of hair, skin and nail care in preparation for the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology exam to become a licensed professional cosmetologist. Students complete this training while also receiving academic instruction to meet Ohio’s high school graduation requirements.
The grand opening marks the first time the salon will be open to the public since its construction. The salon will be open to the public every Wednesday during the school year from 12:30 – 5 p.m. Appointments at the Northwest Career Center location can be scheduled by calling 513-742-7126. Pricing is set to cover the cost of supplies and equipment. For a list of services and prices, visit ButlerTech.org/Salon.
All salon services are performed by students under the supervision of cosmetology instructor Kyra Tyler, who has more than 22 years of experience in the cosmetology industry, including as an inspector with the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.
There is no tuition cost for high school juniors and seniors to attend Butler Tech’s career training programs. “It can cost more than $10,000 for someone to attend a cosmetology program after high school, so earning career credentials though programs like ours at Butler Tech offers a huge financial advantage,” said Tyler. “Our graduates will have more options after high school, whether they want to go directly into the workforce, seek more advanced training, or even go into college and use their cosmetology skills as a source of income while pursuing a career in another field.”
Butler Tech also operates a full service salon for its cosmetology program at the D. Russel Lee campus at 3603 Hamilton-Middletown Road in Fairfield Township. It can be reached at 513-645-8212.
